improving urban natural environment
Recognizing the need for preserving green spaces in downtown, Herstoric Development prioritized the inclusion of community-focused outdoor areas in our plans. Despite its name, the Monroe Park neighborhood lacks a public park and has very little cultivated green space. To address this, we founded our non-profit arm, Milkweed Gardens Inc., and acquired the vacant lots at 512 and 530 S. Michigan, with the vision of transforming them into vibrant green spaces that meet the needs of local residents and enhance the neighborhood’s livability.
plans for vacant lots
The plans for the lots include a community pocket park, event space, pollinator gardens, urban farming, and a geothermal field to supply sustainable heating and cooling to the adjacent buildings. These lots will support the small businesses and residential tenants leasing space in the surrounding mixed-use buildings, while also offering visitors a break from the brick and concrete of the downtown built environment. They will be a literal breath of fresh air.
make a donation
Our work in these urban greenspaces is made possible thanks to the generosity of people like you. Donations are needed to cover property expenses, park, garden, and farming infrastructure, and to reach our goal of installing a geothermal field which will reduce consumption of natural resources while providing affordable utilities for tenants.
Milkweed Gardens Inc. is a 501(c)(3) non-profit, tax-exempt organization. Charitable contributions are tax-deductible.
